Cathedral High School Class of 1964 - Super Bowl XLVI
Pictures in Gallery: 41
As soon as the NFL announced that the Super Bowl would be in Indianapolis, the city began its preparations. So many changes have been made that the city is totally unlike anything that we grew up with.  The entire downtown area has become party central, with festivities spreading out to all areas of the city, including Fountain Square, Massachusetts Aveue and Broad Ripple, and also to most of the suburbs.

The center of all activity is Georgia Street which has been transformed into Super Bowl Village.  (For those who do not remember Georgia Street, it is the second street south of Washington Street and is only 3 blocks long, stretching from the Convention Center on Capitol to Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Pennsylvania.) There were two stages on Georgia Street with free concerts featuring every genre of music and major recording stars and bands.  The crowds have grown from 30,000 ten days before the Super Bowl to 150,000 the weekend of the game.  In total more than 1,000,000 people visited the Village over the10 days.

The zip line begins 100 feet in the air on a platform erected on Capitol Avenue just north of the railroad tracks and ends in front of St Johns church.  A new Super Bowl attendance record was set when more than 265,000 people enjoyed the NFL experience that used the entire Convention Center and attached tents on South Street across from Lucas Oil Stadium (total of 850,000 square feet).

There was no unused space downtown.  Tents were erected on all parking lots as entertainment centers.   Every unoccupied store became an NFL merchandise outlet or a VIP party facility.  Official functions and parties have been held in all available venues including the Speedway, the state fairgrounds, Victory Field, Indianapolis Art Museum, Clowes Hall, the Murat Theater; and Jimmy Fallon recorded his show at the Circle Theater.

Television station WFYI produced a very interesting documentary explaining how Indy transformed itself from Naptown to Super City.  In case you missed it, you can view it by clicking here
